Get Creative in the New Year

Get Creative in the New Year

By Carleton Varney- Special to the Palm Beach Daily News

It’s almost the New Year, so it’s time to make those resolutions.

My hope for all of you is to try something new in 2020. Maybe you’ll try taking piano lessons, something my sister did — and how I wish I had followed her example. A person who plays the piano, particularly songs that can be sung, is always welcomed at the party.

Maybe you’ll plant a vegetable garden this summer or, like a friend of mine, you’ll write that book you’ve always talked about doing.

You might also take an art class. Or, if I may suggest, you could take a spin on the potters wheel or try your hand at fusing glass or designing custom tiles.

I recently stopped by The Craft Gallery at 5911 S. Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach (561-762-8162), and there, working at her craft, was the talented Betty Wilson. I met her a few years back when she opened her craft shop in Lake Worth. Betty, I learned, created the tile designs for the Animal Kingdom Lodge at Disney World.

Betty has been crafting since 1981, starting out in her hometown of Martinsville, Indiana. And she certainly could help you welcome the New Year in an artistic way through her classes in pottery, tile design or glass-fusing. She offers individual or group lessons at her well-equipped studio. Fees run anywhere from $50 to $75 an hour, which includes all the materials necessary for kiln firing.

Many of her creations are also on sale in the gallery, which, incidentally, is next door to the Carvel ice cream shop, where the pink grapefruit sorbet is the very best I’ve ever tasted. Among the decorative sculptures displayed at the gallery is a three-dimensional fish sculpture, which she has duly signed. It’s priced at $395 and would be perfect for a sideboard or a console table in a Palm Beach living room.

Those with a more out-of-the-box taste might want to check out her creative Cleopatra sculpture, perfect for a pedestal, at $295. Perhaps my favorite piece is a charger — in white, clear and crystal glass — titled Morning Dew, for $195.

The craft gallery is open daily and could very well be the spot for you to step through a new door in 2020. Open your mind, explore your options and let your creativity flow.
